You suffered a foot injury and had to cancel your second fight in the UFC. How is your recovery going?

I’m doing physical therapy, dealing with the injury as I should. My foot is already much better. Started practicing again last week, it feels much stronger. Shortly after my UFC debut, I was scheduled to fight Brandon Vera and the foot did not have time to recover. I had an injury and I was running, not allowing my foot to heal. Now I started training, but I’m not running yet. I’m focusing more on my muscles, but I am back in training. Next month I will be scheduling a fight.

Any idea when you will return to the octagon?

This week I’ll be in touch with the UFC. I look forward to my second fight. God willing I will be back in late March or April. I have no idea who I will face, because there are many people in the division that are hurt.

After defeating Luis Cane, who is considered in the top 10 of the divison, the UFC offered you a fight against Brandon Vera, who came off a defeat to Randy Couture. Did you like the choice, or would you have preferred a higher ranked fighter?

I think every fight is a different fight, and Brandon Vera is a guy who has fought for the title. He has a very strong name in the United States has done well in many fights. He knocked out Frank Mir, he fights very well with good knockouts. He is a guy who has a very good technical level. I have been personally watching him train at his academy. He would be a good fight for me, in terms of publicity and name recognition.

Currently, the belt is held by Lyoto Machida. Do you believe that after a couple of wins, you will have the chance to compete for the belt later this year?

I’m in no hurry, I still have many fights to make. This is largely dependent on the UFC, the organizers, because we do not choose our opponents, they are the matchmakers.

How is training with Anderson Silva?

Anderson is training well. He is good, and strong. It’s always surprising, because the guy is very fast. He is very good, starting to train now. He will have plenty of time to train. In regards to his injury, he has recovered.

You have trained with Vitor Belfort in BTT and are now training with Anderson, and they will meet in Abu Dhabi. What do you expect for this fight?

This question is complicated. I think it will be a good fight because both fighters are very experienced. You will certainly see a good fight.

Your brother is in San Diego training. Will you go to the U.S. to help him in the final stretch?

Yes, I will be. I am now going in early February to do sparring with him. When I left there he was fine, working at a strong pace, doing lots of wrestling with Marco Muñoz. He is training on the ground with Allan Goes … Rodrigo is very focused. The physical part of it is very good, he is very strong, with good explosion. He is up with his diet and has returned to the same weight as his fight against Randy, 105kg, and is moving better. I strongly believe in him. He has more experience and will win this fight because of it.

Has the team drawn up a strategy for his fight against Cain Velasquez?

I believe he can take this fight standing easily, he is more experienced, better. He’s trained for much longer, has seen struggles abroad for over ten years, and is tougher. I’m sure this fight is a win for Rodrigo. I think Cain Velasquez will want to take this fight to the ground, because Rodrigo has the better striking.
