“MMA Blog” Articles for November 2008's MMA Live: UFC 99 Between Liddell and Couture Uncertain

By Mike Crowley (November 30, 2008)

This week’s MMALive addressed the match-up simply stating that neither camp has discussed or made any commitments to fighting in Germany.

Hardcore fan interest has been lukewarm. UFC promoters however feel that the match-up would be a hit on the German front.

Griffin vs. Shogun

The brazillian website has conducted an interview with Maurício “Shogun” Rua. I have corrected some translational errors. The original interview can be found here.

How is the preparation for the fight against Coleman?
I’m 100%, thank God. I’m training a lot and I’ll give a show to all my fans in Brazil, and from all over the world. For… (Read more)

Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre

A phrase that Dana White has often used, is that “this fight will be the biggest fight in mma history.”

Well, for once I believe him. Assuming that Georges St.Pierre can get past B.J. Penn, White has hinted that a fight with Anderson Silva would be his next.

In a recent interview with MMA Weekly White was quoted as saying:

_“If Georges wins, obviously there’s another super-figh… (Read more)

Tightened Belts Leaves No Room for Werdum

By Mike Crowley (November 29, 2008)

Reported at the Fabricio Werdum camp failed to strike a deal with Affliction. According to the report, the aim was to participate in Affliction’s “Day of Reckoning” event on 24 January 2009, but negotiations failed when it came to numbers. Currently there are no plans to reopen the discussion.

Werdum is considered to be a top ten heavyweight, but has not… (Read more)

Fedor: Suddenly Serious

By Matt Scott (November 28, 2008)

After being beaten is his national sport, Sambo, Fedor has cancelled his American press tour. This is good and bad news.

For fans, it means that we’ll see a very intensely trained Fedor, as he will want to rebound from this loss.

For Affliction, it means poor press coverage without Fedor.

M-1 Global has released this statement:

_”My trainers, Vladimir Voronov and Alexander Michkov, met with me in Russia after the World S… (Read more)

Sokoudjou Cut by UFC

By Matt Scott (November 28, 2008)
Posted in MMA Blog

Numerous sites are now reporting that Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou has been released by the UFC.

This is hardly startling news, as the UFC has made an effort as of late to trim down their massive roster.

Sokoudjou was 1-2 inside the octagon, and a major disappointment for the UFC.

UFC 91 Draws Big Numbers, But Not 1.2 Million Worth

UFC 91

Were you one of the 800,000-850,000 (numbers courtesy of Dave Meltzer’s Wrestling Observer) people to tune into UFC 91 to watch Brock Lesnar become the new UFC HW champion? I know I was.

Dana White and the UFC projected bigger numbers (around 400,000 more buys), but people are saying that it was just so they could get ESPN to cover the event. If that was the case, then it worked out perfectly.

The report… (Read more)

Florian Wants Sherk

"I Finish Fights"

Following Kenny Florian’s impressive first round submission win over Joe Stevenson at UFC 91, Florian was back to his post-fight routine, shouting that B.J. Penn was a master, and that it was time for him to kill that master.

To the untrained eye, it could have looked uncouth and quite ridiculous, but coming from Kenny Florian, it was quite obviously an attempt at some positive P.R. towards this potential fight. Florian clea… (Read more)
